Fusital H377 Serie SL D: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

Steve Leung Designers Ltd. Reimagines Door Handle Design

The Fusital H377 Serie SL D, a door handle design by Steve Leung Designers Ltd., is a remarkable blend of traditional Chinese aesthetics and contemporary design. The design draws inspiration from the bold geometry of traditional Chinese brass hardware and antique door locksets, reinterpreted with a modern aesthetic appeal.

The unique properties of the design lie in its meticulously selected finishes. The dark bronze finish pays homage to the heritage that inspired the collection, the titanium finish gives the handle an elegant and contemporary "unfinished" look, and the matt black version is a timeless classic that contrasts perfectly with total white interiors. This variety of finishes provides options to match different interior designs, representing traditional, industrial, and contemporary styles.

The design was realized using a combination of traditional hand sketching and cutting-edge 3D printing technology. The design team, led by Steve Leung and Chong Chiu Fung, saw the visual project take shape and experienced the feel of the products during the development of the collection. This process involved exploring the ergonomic aspect and tactile dimension, leading to research into materials and finishes for the project.

The door handle is an essential yet often overlooked element of interior design. It determines a person's initial approach to space, offering a visual and tactile experience that creates the first impression of an interior. The H377 collection, defined by the designer as “a bold statement”, was designed for interiors featuring minimalist elegance. It presents a contemporary minimal design with the optimal balance of aesthetics and functionality, exploring while paying tribute to the deep origins of traditional Chinese culture.

In the underlying research for this design, the team started with simple shapes – circle, square, and arch – which have significant meanings in Chinese culture. The circle represents completeness, unity, and femininity, while the square shows masculinity, precision, and stability. The arch, a celebrated architectural feature in ancient Europe, was also incorporated to enhance the product characteristics. The use of these shapes establishes the product DNA and demonstrates how the design merges contemporary style and the beauty of Chinese culture.

The Fusital H377 Serie SL D door handle design was awarded Silver in A' Building Materials and Construction Components Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
